Life as an Agent
26th October 2017
“So, what is it you do exactly?”
It’s a question I get asked a lot. I’m an agent, but what does an agent actually do?
Well, it’s hard to pinpoint all of the details. Bare bones, I act on our clients’ behalf to help secure opportunities, negotiate contracts, and work alongside the managers in all aspects of our presenters’ and actors’ careers. I also oversee the main financial deals for our voice over artists, and for our comedians with our sister company CatFace Talent.
But it’s much more than that. It’s a job that means I haven’t had a true day off for nearly 10 years. It’s a job that means that you need the most understanding partner in the world; My wife married a man who worked for around two hours per day, every day, on our honeymoon.
It’s a job where sometimes it’s important to support the people you work with when the biggest opportunities arise. Look at my weekend just gone. Saturday at the BBC in Manchester with Jonny Nelson for BBC’s Saturday Mash Up!, Sunday with Luisa Omielan in Liverpool as she continues her nationwide tour, and Monday with Layla Anna-Lee as she hosted live to 900 million for the Best FIFA Football Awards. It’s being there before, during, and for the celebrations after.
Oh, and look carefully at the photo of Layla and Real Madrid superstar Marcelo, a photo used in press all over the world and there I am, just there, just in case…. being an agent.
